Four USPTA Members Win Titles at ITF Senior World Championships
HOUSTON, , May 16, 2014 – Four USPTA Professionals won five division championships and eight were runners-up in five categories at the 2014 ITF Seniors World Individual Championships at the BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Former ATP pro and USPTA Elite Professional Mikael Pernfors (Vero Beach, Fla.) captured the men’s 50 singles title, and also the doubles title in the same division with partner Tobias Svantesson of Sweden, also an Elite Pro.
The men’s 45 doubles final featured three USPTA pros. Professional Aldo Burga (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) took home the championship with partner Ricardo Mendevil, besting Elite Pro Carl Clark (Leawood, Kan.) and Professional Mario Tabares (Miami), 3-6, 6-4, [10-7].
Elite Professional Mike Tammen (Portland) won the men’s 55 division title with partner Daniel Waldman by defeating Elite Pros Wesley Cash (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Mark Vines (Lynchburg, Va.), 6-4, 6-4.
Professional Frank Vermeer (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a runner-up finish after taking Eoin Collins to three sets in the men’s 45 singles division, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
On the women’s side, four USPTA pros advanced to the final match in their respective categories. Professional Vesna McKenna (Hollywood, Fla.) and partner Julie Cass came in second in the 45 doubles division, having to retire before the end of the match.
Elite Professionals Vicki Buholz (Dallas) and Judy Newman (Scotts Valley, Calif.) played a close first set in the 50 doubles division but ultimately came in second after posting a 7-6(4), 1-6, [10-5] score.
Elite Pro Mary Ginnard (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and partner Tina Karwasky also went to three sets in the 55 doubles division but fell in the championship match 4-6, 6-3, [10-7].
